Tanzania's 4th largest park and hidden gem, offering authentic safari experiences without crowds. Located just 4-5 hours from Dar es Salaam with abundant wildlife, 400+ bird species, and stunning Uluguru Mountain backdrop. Part of the vast Selous ecosystem.

Mikumi National Park is a true gem among Tanzania's national parks, often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors but offering equally remarkable wildlife experiences without the crowds. Located in southeastern Tanzania, Mikumi is the fourth-largest national park in the country, covering approximately 3,230 square kilometers.
Established in 1964, the park began as a small game reserve and was significantly expanded in 1975 when land from both the southern and northern sides was added. The park is named after the nearby Mikumi village and the surrounding Mikumi Plains, which form an integral part of the larger Selous ecosystem. Mikumi shares a border with Selous Game Reserve (now Nyerere National Park), creating a vital wildlife corridor.
The park's landscape is incredibly diverse, featuring vast grassy plains reminiscent of the Serengeti, acacia woodlands, and Miombo woodlands, all set against the majestic backdrop of the Uluguru Mountains. Located approximately 283 kilometers west of Dar es Salaam, Mikumi is one of Tanzania's most accessible national parks, making it perfect for weekend getaways and short 2-3 day safaris. The park's proximity to Tanzania's commercial capital, combined with excellent wildlife viewing, makes it an ideal introduction to Tanzania's southern safari circuit.

However, Mikumi is open year-round, and the green season (December-April) offers its unique charm with lush landscapes, dramatic skies, fewer tourists, and exceptional bird watching opportunities including migratory species.
